5 Tips for Tasting Wine

Wine tasting is an art that can be enjoyed by wine enthusiasts of all levels. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned pro, there are always new things to learn and discover about the world of wine. In this blog post, we will explore five tips for tasting wine that will help you get the most out of your wine tasting experience.

Colour

One of the first things you should do when tasting wine is to observe its colour. The colour of a wine can tell you a lot about its age, variety, and where it was grown. Young wines tend to be more vibrant in colour, while older wines may be more amber or brown in colour. By studying the colour of a wine, you can get a sense of its character and learn more about what to expect from the taste.

Smell

The next step in the wine tasting process is to give the wine a good sniff. The aroma of a wine can be just as important as its taste, and it can reveal a lot about the wine’s character and quality. Take a deep breath in and try to identify the different scents and aromas in the wine. You may pick up on fruity, floral, or earthy notes, or even hints of oak or spice.

Swirl

Swirling the wine in your glass can help to release its aromas and give you a better sense of its character. To swirl the wine, gently rotate the glass in a circular motion, taking care not to spill any of the wine. As you swirl the wine, you will notice the liquid coat the sides of the glass, which is known as the “legs” of the wine. The thickness of the legs can indicate the wine’s body and alcohol content.

Sip

Now it’s time to take a sip of the wine and see how it tastes; it is a chance to consider the fruit characteristics, acidity, and the tannin structure of the wine. Pay attention to the fruit flavours in the wine, as well as the acidity and tannins. Fruit flavours can range from citrus to berry to stone fruit, and each wine will have its own unique blend of flavours. Acid gives wine its crispness and liveliness, while tannins provide structure and can give the wine a drying sensation in the mouth.

Finish

The finish of a wine is the taste that lingers in your mouth after you have taken a sip. A good wine will have a long, smooth finish that leaves you wanting more. Pay attention to the length of the finish and whether it is pleasant or harsh. The finish can give you a good indication of the wine’s overall quality and character.

By following these five tips for tasting wine, you will be well on your way to becoming a wine tasting pro. Remember to have fun and enjoy the experience, and don’t be afraid to try new things and expand your wine knowledge. So, these are the five tips for tasting wine which will help you to get the most out of your wine tasting experience.

St Hallett Faith Shiraz 2014

St Hallett Faith Shiraz 2014

The St Hallett Faith Shiraz 2014 is a deep crimson red colour in the glass. This wine is a flavoursome and concentrated Shiraz from the Barossa Valley with great mouthfeel and length of flavour with fine soft tannins. Drinks nicely now with potential for a few more years to develop further. On the nose it has the fragrance of black fruit and some spice and the palate has notes of chocolate with some subtleties of vanilla and oak.
